Orphans education in Tanzania

Orphans education in Tanzania
Children attend class in Tanga region, Tanzania

Organisation: AFRIWAG/Oxfam
Location: Tanga region, Tanzania
Project: Supporting orphan’s education

In  the Tanga region in the north east of Tanzania HIV and Aids prevalence in the is 5.7% with most infected and dying people aged 25 to 49 years old, leaving behind thousands of orphaned children who cannot care for themselves.

Attending school could change these children’s lives although many reasons, from having to shoulder the burden of responsibility of heading a household or caring for a critically ill parent, through to being unable to afford simple school materials and fees, means that they do not get the chance.

African Women Aids Working Group (AFRIWAG) works to ensure that the health and educational needs of these vulnerable children are met and Adsum Foundation provided funds towards Oxfam’s programme with AFRIWAG that ensures 2350 children will attend primary school and have the necessary materials.

The programme also provides medical support and healthcare to 2350 orphans and vulnerable children through community health provision such as ensuring that those suffering from malaria, diarrhoea and infections, among other things, receive the care and treatment that they need.
