Sanitation project DPRK

Sanitation project DPRK
Recently established ChimgyoRi Solar Pumping Station

Organisation: Concern Worldwide
Location: DPR Korea
Project: Clean Water and Sanitation Project

The project will improve the living conditions of 104,442 men and women in the two towns and on two co-operative farms of Kangwon (Anbyon County) and South Hwanghae (Samchon County) province.

The project commenced in January 2013 and will be completed in December 2015. In total three villages will benefit from access to safe drinking water along with other interventions such as improved sanitation, food production and processing. These communities are extremely vulnerable and have little or no access to water and environmental sanitation systems. Consequently, standards of hygiene and infection are compromised because of poor water quality resulting in outbreaks of water-borne diseases, the most rife being diarrhoea. The current use of traditional pit latrines further creates a danger of transmitting vector-borne diseases, overflow and contamination of drinking water.

Specifically, Adsum Foundation will contribute to gravity water supply and renewable solar pumping water supply systems. Village representatives will manage and maintain the water systems and other project interventions to ensure long-term, lasting impact, benefitting future generations.
