Adsums Big Give Christmas Challenge

Adsums Big Give Christmas Challenge

Adsum is gearing up to double supporters' Christmas donations by taking part in the UK's biggest match funding campaign, The Big Give Christmas Challenge. Now in its 13th year, The Big Give launches on 1st December (Giving Tuesday) and runs for just 7 days until the 8th December. This year, we are very thankful to be Champion funded by Waterloo International.

Our Christmas challenge is aiming to raise funds for a borehole well for the community of Ambohibory Village and the pupils at Ambohibory Primary school. We've set ourselves an online fundraising target at £2,050. In light of the Covid-19 health pandemic, it's now more than ever that people need access to clean water.

A borehole well in Ambohibory will benefit 120 people from 28 households as well as 130 pupils at Ambohibory Primary School.

Currently, the community of Ambohibory village fetch water from 2 sources; one being an unprotected spring and the other from the nearby river. Both of which are visibly dirty and contaminated, particularly during the rainy and cyclone season. For this community, the water from the two sources is used for all purposes whether for washing, laundry, cleaning utensils as well as drinking and cooking. This contributes to a high prevalence of diarrhoeal disease and fevers.

Further to drilling the borehole well, we ensure the sustainability and longevity of every well by engaging the community in a participatory approach, sharing key WASH principles, education and training throughout the process. Three village maintenance technicians will be trained and a water management committee will be put in place to manage the borehole and raise awareness amongst the community.

A donation to our Big Give Campaign will help people like, Velosoa, a mother of one who lives in Ambohibory.

"We only have dirty water, located too close to the rice-fields. During the rainy period, the water is very dirty and causes a lot of illness. We need clean drinking water infrastructure because we have to drink this very cloudy and yellow water - both this source and the river are very dirty."

To help people like Velosoa, we are urging Adsum supporters to donate to our Big Give Campaign between the 1st and 8th of December so that we can provide access to clean water for 250 people.
