Location
The programme took place in 50 learning centres across Tsihombe and Ambovombe in southern Madagascar, including Amboasary II.
Beneficiaries
Adults of different ages took part in the programme, from 15 to over 35 years old. More women than men took part in both areas.
Objectives
The programme helps adults improve their reading, writing and maths skills, giving them more confidence and skills they can use in everyday life and their communities.
Project Background
Local teachers ran the literacy classes for three hours a day, five days a week.
Some adults found it difficult to attend every day because of hunger, work and family responsibilities.
This included farming, collecting firewood and caring for animals. Despite these challenges, learners continued to attend classes and improve their skills.
The End Result
Learners improved their reading and maths skills throughout the programme, with results showing how much they had learned from beginning to end.
The programme has also helped people beyond the classroom.
Former learners have gone on to become teachers, health workers, village leaders and take on other roles in their communities.
One example is Damy, who became a teacher at the same learning centre in Amboasary where she had once been a learner.
