Helping Communities to thrive in Madagascar
We inspire people, businesses and funding bodies to support projects that have a lasting positive impact for communities in need in Madagascar.

Why Madagascar?
On the Human Development Index which indicates life expectancy, education rates and standard of living, Madagascar ranks 183 out of 193 countries worldwide.
Extreme weather and climate events are increasing the humanitarian needs of communities already suffering from extreme poverty, with Madagascar suffering the first ‘climate induced famine’.
Communities in need in Madagascar have received little focus and support from international media and non-governmental organisation’s when compared to other locations.
Most of Madagascar’s plants and animals have evolved in isolation over millions of years into species that are not found anywhere else in the world.
We aim to inspire people, businesses, and funding bodies to support projects that will have a lasting positive impact for communities in need in Madagascar.

Extreme Poverty
More than 80% of people live in extreme poverty.
Chronic Malnutrition
Nearly half of children under five are affected by chronic malnutrition.
No Drinking Water
Almost half of people have no access to safe drinking water.
No Sanitation
Only 12% of people have access to basic sanitation services.
Who We Are
Since establishing in 2008, we have worked in various developing countries in partnership with a range of both large and small-scale Non-Government-Organisations. We have supported projects that have built wells in Tanzania, provided disaster relief in Pakistan and distributed mosquito nets in Uganda.
In recent years, we have focused our support on development activities based in rural Madagascar, an area with some of the highest global rates of poverty, chronic malnutrition, and illiteracy.

What We Do
We support communities to break the cycle of extreme poverty and it's negative consequences through the delivery of sustainable projects in 3 key areas.

What does the Adsum Foundation do?
We inspire people, businesses and funding bodies to support projects that have a lasting positive impact for communities in need in Madagascar. Then we partner with effective and reliable charitable organisations based in Madagascar to deliver objectives in three key areas of building wells and schools, and providing access to education for community members.
Are you a registered charity?
Yes, since August 2015 we have been registered with the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, charity no. 102284. You can see the information the commission holds about us, including our annual accounts, by visiting their website.
Why does the Adsum Foundation focus on Madagascar?
We focus on Madagascar because many communities still lack access to clean water, education and other basic services. By working with trusted organisations based in Madagascar, we can support projects that make a real and lasting difference. Madagascar is a country with culture and resilience, and we want to support local people in creating better opportunities for their future.
Why don't people have access to water and education?
Many of the communities we work with live in extremely remote areas, sometimes inaccessible by vehicles. This challenge, along with extreme poverty and politicial instability means that access to clean safe water and an education are a luxury for many who are simply trying to survive day to day.
How do you choose which communities to work with?
Our partner organisations in Madagascar leads this process. They work directly with local communities to understand where support is needed most and where our funding can make a lasting difference. We rely on their local knowledge, experience and relationships with the communities to guide where we work.
Do you work with local people?
Yes. Our partner organisations are based in Madagascar and work directly with local communities to deliver the projects we fund.
How do I know your work is sustainable for the long term?
Each of our projects is reviewed for its long term impact, for example, when a well is installed, our delivery partner ensures that community members have been recruited and trained to operate their own ‘Water Management Committee’ to maintain long term success of the infrastructure. Another example, is that of the school builds, every year a member of the delivery team visits each school to carry out an assessment in terms of wear and tear/damage; remedial works are then carried out on a priority basis. During these visits, new resource packs for the school’s learning library are provided to maintain an interesting and up-to-date catalogue of books, which are treasured luxury items to the students.
How are your projects monitored and evaluated?
We keep in regular contact with our partners in Madagascar throughout each project. They provide written and imagery-based updates and reports so we can follow the progress of the work. We also receive a final report when a project is complete. This helps us see how the project is progressing and understand the difference it is making.
Who are your local partner organisations?
We work with a small number of trusted charitable organisations based in Madagascar. They have the local knowledge and experience needed to deliver the projects we fund. Working in this way helps make sure that the projects we support respond to what communities need. If you would like to know more about our partners or a specific project, we are happy to share further details.
How can I support the work?

We welcome fundraising by individuals, schools, workplaces and community groups, and we can provide ideas and guidance to help you get started.
