Success Story

Ambohimiara Sud

In 2023, due to the generosity of a local private donor, this remote village was able to benefit from the construction of a safe and welcoming school by the Madagascar Development Fund.

Location

Ambohimiara Sud is located within a remote mountainous area, North East of the capital Antananarivo.

Beneficiaries

There were just under 100 children enrolled at the time of the new school opening.

Objectives

To build a safe and welcoming space for the purposes of education of Primary School age children.

Project Background

The original school buildings had been constructed by local villagers in the 70s and 80s and were in poor condition with cracked walls, leaking roofs and little natural light or ventilation. They were also over capacity and cramped.

The End Result

It is hoped that with the improvement in learning conditions that over time, opportunity for diverse income generation and paid employment should become more readily available to the young people graduating from the school who will have gained skills in reading, writing and maths; this should help to alleviate local families suffering in times of hardship, such as drought and crop failure, who currently solely rely on small-scale farming as a source of income. As well as these benefits, it is hoped that the better working environment created for the team of teachers will retain these professionals for a long and successful career within the village.
