Success Story

Andasinimaromena

In 2013, due to the generosity of a local private donor, this remote village was able to benefit from the construction of a safe and welcoming school by the Madagascar Development Fund.

Location

Andasinimaromena Betsohana is located within a remote and inaccessible area, surrounded by dirt tracks for roads and crocodile infested rivers.

Beneficiaries

There were over 100 children enrolled at the time of the new school’s opening.

Objectives

To build a safe and welcoming space for the purposes of education of Primary School age children.

Project Background

There had been 86 children enrolled in the original school but due to lack of capacity and its very poor condition, including a leaking roof, dark rooms and cracked walls, many local children did not attend due to safety concerns of their parents.

The End Result

It is anticipated that as word spreads, enrolment will rise further by an estimated 30-50 children as this Primary School is the only one available to communities over a large area. Over time, opportunity for diverse income generation and paid employment should become more readily available to the young people graduating from the school who will have gained skills in reading, writing and maths; this should help to alleviate local families suffering in times of hardship, such as drought and crop failure, who currently solely rely on small-scale farming as a source of income. As well as these benefits, it is hoped that the better working environment created for the team of teachers will retain these professionals for a long and successful career within the village.
