Location
The programme was delivered through 300 literacy centres across 23 communes in the Androy region of southern Madagascar, including communities such as Anjampaly, Belavenoke and Tanemira.
Beneficiaries
Adult learners from communities across the Androy region took part in the programme. Learners balanced attending classes with everyday responsibilities including farming, caring for livestock and supporting their families.
Objectives
The programme aimed to provide adults with basic reading, writing and numeracy skills, helping them become more independent and use these skills in everyday life.
Project Background
Classes were held within local communities, making learning more accessible to adults. Attendance varied throughout the programme because of work, food shortages, and other commitments, but learners continued to develop their reading, writing, and numeracy skills.
The End Result
The programme created opportunities beyond the classroom. Among former learners identified in parts of the programme, 24% went on to read to others or teach reading, 20% carried out administrative work within their local communities, and 20% became local community leaders. Others used their new skills to support health programmes, help within their communities and manage money or keep financial records.
Learning to read, write and work with numbers has given participants skills they can carry with them, opening up new possibilities for themselves, their families and their communities.
