Success Story

Behabobo

In 2023, with support from external donors, Satraha led a literacy programme across the Androy region, with classes taught by local trainers. Many adults gained vital skills and are now using them in daily life and community roles.

Location

The programme took place in communities across the Androy region of southern Madagascar, including Ambovombe, Sihanamaro and Behabobo.

Beneficiaries

Nearly 2,900 adults joined classes in early 2023, with many going on to lead, work locally or continue learning.

Objectives

The programme helps adults improve their reading, writing and numeracy, build confidence and take a more active role in their communities, even during drought and food insecurity.

Project Background

Despite drought and insecurity in early 2023, literacy centres stayed open. Satraha’s trainers adapted routes and worked with communities to keep classes going. Many joined to learn basic skills, and some hope to become trainers themselves. Attendance remained strong, especially where food access had improved.

The End Result

Many learners now use their reading, writing and numeracy skills in daily life, take on community roles, run small businesses or return to education. The programme is bringing lasting change to individuals and their communities.
