Location
Tanambao village is located in Maromiandra rural municipality in the Ikongo district of the Fitovinany region in southeast Madagascar. It is a remote area, with the final stretch of the journey only accessible on foot.
Beneficiaries
The new borehole directly benefits 56 people in 14 households in Tanambao village, including young children. In addition, it indirectly supports 834 people from 176 households living in the surrounding area.
Objectives
The project aimed to provide access to safe and reliable drinking water, improve hygiene and sanitation, reduce waterborne illness, and strengthen community capacity through training and local management of the water point.
Project Background
Before the borehole was installed, the community relied on water from a small river near a rice field, which was often dirty and unsafe to drink. This contributed to diarrhoeal disease and other illnesses.
The community supported the installation of the new borehole, and a local water committee was established and trained to help manage and maintain it.
The End Result
The borehole now provides the village with clean drinking water, meaning families no longer have to rely on contaminated water for their daily needs.
Access to safe water has improved health, hygiene, and sanitation, making a lasting difference in everyday life in the village and surrounding community.
