Location
Tanambao village is located in Kelilalina rural municipality in the Ifanadiana district of Vatovavy region of southeast Madagascar.
Beneficiaries
This well benefits more than 375 local residents.
Objectives
To provide a safe, sustainable and accessible water source for local community members.
Project Background
Inhabitants of Tanambao previously fetched water from a small river, or an old open traditional spring, both of which were visibly dirty and contaminated, particularly during the rainy and cyclone season. The water was used for all purposes, whether for washing people, laundry and dishes, as well as for drinking and cooking; this contributed to a high prevalence of diarrhoeal disease and fevers.
The End Result
The water source is now within the village, making it less time consuming and more accessible for community members to collect daily water supplies. The water is safe to drink, and the infrastructure will be maintained by the three village maintenance technicians and the water management committee that were established and trained during the project. The incidence of water-related illnesses should reduce within the village, enabling more capacity for education and employment.
