Providing children access to safe and functional spaces for education
A Human Right
There are not enough buildings to facilitate education at Primary School level in Madagascar. Whats more, the buildings that are being utilised, have often been built by local community members decades ago, resulting in cramped, dark and hot spaces with significant structural issues such as leaking roofs and collapsing walls.
Not only do children have to contend with these challenges whilst trying to learn but they often have to share their classroom with other year groups.
These conditions can deter parents, who may already be struggling financially, to pay school fees due to significant safety and quality of education concerns.
All of these factors combined mean that many children simply do not attend school, or do not progress to secondary-level education, when they would have been capable to given an appropriate environment to learn in.

Primary Schools built to-date
For the school programme, we work with our partner the Madagascar Development Fund, who research and select appropriate locations, build the schools and facilitate ongoing maintnenace assessment and works.
Creating safe, functional and welcoming spaces has increased both parent’s and children’s motivation to attend school, improving graduation results and future employment opportunities.
The better working environment acts to retain quality teaching staff for the longer term for a community.
Schools are assessed annually for structural maintenance work that is required, with building methods and plans reviewed periodically to learn from and improve.
Schools are provided with resources such as tables, chairs, books and sports equipment upon opening, and each year during the maintenance assessment are provided with a new pack of books.
