Providing communities access to clean and safe water in rural Madagascar

A Basic Human Need

Having access to clean and safe water is an essential daily requirement for us all, yet so many rural communities in Madagascar do not have a reliable supply for their needs. This lack of access has very serious impacts on the communities here, often with the most vulnerable most affected.

  • Access

Only 34% of people in rural Madagascar have access to clean and safe water

  • Disease

In children under five, at least 25% of the mortality and 50% of the stunting rates are due to water-related diseases

  • Inequality

Women and girls carry the majority, if not all, of the labour and time burden of sourcing and transporting water

The creation of reliable and sustainable water sources reduces the prevalence of disease and death, frees up time for education and income generation, and makes water more accessible to members of the community with mobility impairment.

For the well programme, we work with our partner Feedback Madagascar, who research and select appropriate locations, drill the wells and install the gravity fed systems.

During this time on location, Feedback Madagascar train and support the communities to establish water management committees and tree nurseries, to encourage self-sustained long-term success of the wells.

Communities are visited periodically to gather information regarding the successes and challenges of the project, with these learnings utilsed in future locations.
