Bicycle distribution in Madagascar a success

Bicycle distribution in Madagascar a success

Avililie will use her bike to distribute medicines and remedies further afield in Androy

A year in the making, our Bikes for Madagascar project is a resounding success thanks to all those who donated bikes and funds to help needy communities have access to these vital forms of transport.

Importing the Bikes - Steve's story .pdf

Last year, in partnership with Belfast charity Bike Aid, we collected over 400 bikes to send out to our friends at the Malagasy charity Satraha in the poor Androy region in the south of Madagascar. These bikes were all donated by you guys, our supporters, and we are delighted to say they have now been distributed and are already in use on the ground.

After we finished the collection in Autumn we shipped the bikes down to Madagascar by container, and after negotiating customs and a few other hazards along the way, not least weather and road conditions, Steve Lellelid and his team at Satraha diligently set about distributing them. Local tradespeople who will use them to improve their one man operations, the health team tasked with providing remedies far and wide and literacy trainers bringing their teaching to the furthest reaches possible, were all among those who for a modest sum are now in possession of a donated bike that will help and improve their daily lives.

So once again a big THANK YOU to everyone who donated time, money and bikes to make the inaugural year of our project such a success.

Stay tuned for a further update next month when we do it all over again, this time aiming to get even more bikes in the hands of people in Madagascar!
